Safety management / ENGINEERING NOTE

An ambient oxygen alarm is not a product-gas analyser

Choose instruments according to the people or process they are intended to protect.

01Separate the purposes

A product analyser measures a controlled gas sample for quality decisions. An ambient monitor assesses the atmosphere at a location relevant to personnel safety. Their ranges, sampling arrangements, alarm functions and maintenance requirements can differ significantly.

02Use a site-specific assessment

A qualified safety assessment should determine whether ambient monitoring is required, where detectors belong and how alarms are handled. Detector placement cannot be copied blindly from another room because gas releases, ventilation and occupancy differ.

03Maintain the safety function

Follow the specified inspection, functional testing and calibration arrangements. Make alarm meaning and response responsibilities clear to operators and contractors. A working product-purity display should never be interpreted as proof that the surrounding room atmosphere is safe.

Apply this guidance with the equipment manual, actual site conditions and applicable requirements. Design, operation and maintenance decisions need appropriately qualified personnel. Confirmed product documents govern a specific equipment supply.
