Recognizing confined-space issues near nitrogen processes

The risk can extend beyond the generator room into connected equipment.

01Map potential spaces

Tanks, pits, vessels and enclosed process areas may be affected by nitrogen used for blanketing or purging. Identify where gas can enter and where personnel might need access. A space does not become safe simply because the generator is outside it.

02Use the site's formal assessment

Qualified personnel must determine the applicable confined-space controls, isolation, atmosphere testing and rescue arrangements. Product gas measurements are not a substitute for evaluating the atmosphere a person would breathe. Contractors and temporary workers need the same clear information.

03Review unusual work

Cleaning, inspection and temporary enclosures can change exposure conditions. Include these tasks in work planning and communication. Suspected oxygen deficiency requires the established emergency response; an unprotected attempt to enter and assist another person can be fatal.

Apply this guidance with the equipment manual, actual site conditions and applicable requirements. Design, operation and maintenance decisions need appropriately qualified personnel. Confirmed product documents govern a specific equipment supply.
