Safety management / ENGINEERING NOTE

Manage pressure protective devices separately from operating settings

Protective functions need their own records and responsibilities.

01Distinguish control from protection

Normal pressure control keeps the process within its operating range. Protective devices address defined abnormal conditions and must be managed under the applicable pressure-equipment requirements. A controller setpoint does not replace a required protective device.

02Maintain a traceable register

Identify relevant vessels and protective accessories, their design basis, inspection status and responsible owner. Keep required certificates and service records accessible. Do not alter protective settings to solve an operational pressure problem without the necessary qualified review.

03Review modifications

Changes to compressors, boosters, piping or operating pressure can affect the protection assessment. Include these changes in the formal review process. After work, confirm the required configuration and documentation before normal operation resumes.

Apply this guidance with the equipment manual, actual site conditions and applicable requirements. Design, operation and maintenance decisions need appropriately qualified personnel. Confirmed product documents govern a specific equipment supply.
