Separation principles / ENGINEERING NOTE

Protecting carbon molecular sieve starts with the feed air

Use inlet evidence before attributing a nitrogen problem to the adsorbent.

01Why preparation matters

Carbon molecular sieve works inside a carefully controlled adsorption cycle. Liquid water, oil contamination and unsuitable operating conditions can undermine separation performance. Protection therefore begins upstream with cooling, drainage, drying and the filtration arrangement specified for the generator.

02Inspect the evidence chain

Retain dryer trends, filter differential pressure, drain observations and compressor service history. If outlet quality changes after a drainage failure or air-source modification, that timing is more useful than a guess based on the age of the adsorbent.

03Plan a qualified assessment

Do not open a pressure vessel or change cycle settings as a first diagnostic step. Give the service provider the inlet and outlet trends, alarm chronology and maintenance records. Any adsorbent inspection or replacement needs the manufacturer's procedure and a subsequent documented performance check.

Apply this guidance with the equipment manual, actual site conditions and applicable requirements. Design, operation and maintenance decisions need appropriately qualified personnel. Confirmed product documents govern a specific equipment supply.
