Why PSA oxygen and PSA nitrogen need different separation systems

Similar process names conceal different adsorbents, gas streams and quality requirements.

01Understand the product stream

In a typical industrial oxygen PSA system, a suitable zeolite adsorbent preferentially retains nitrogen. The product is oxygen-enriched gas. A nitrogen PSA system uses a different adsorption behaviour and produces nitrogen-rich gas; the two machines are not interchangeable by changing a controller setting.

02Describe the composition

Ask for the product composition basis, permitted operating range and intended industrial application. An oxygen concentration alone does not identify every remaining component or establish suitability for a regulated end use.

03Check process compatibility

Give the downstream equipment supplier the proposed oxygen concentration, flow, pressure and moisture conditions. Obtain confirmation for that complete inlet specification. Industrial oxygen generation should not be presented as a medical supply system without the separate approvals and design requirements that such use requires.

Apply this guidance with the equipment manual, actual site conditions and applicable requirements. Design, operation and maintenance decisions need appropriately qualified personnel. Confirmed product documents govern a specific equipment supply.
