Instrument performance, calibration reference, sampling, pressure effects and repeatability can all affect a reported result. Use a suitable uncertainty evaluation for the measurement task. The last digit on a digital display should not be assumed to be a reliable decision margin.
02Agree the decision rule
Before testing, define how measurement uncertainty will be considered when a result is close to the acceptance limit. The buyer, supplier and testing party should understand the same rule. Otherwise identical readings can lead to conflicting pass-or-fail interpretations.
03Improve the evidence where needed
If the margin is too small for a clear decision, review the method, sample arrangement or instrument capability. Repeat testing only under a justified plan, not until a favourable number appears. Retain the full result and conditions in the acceptance record.
